Groundbreaking of the Lake Nona Library Marks a Major Milestone for the Growing Community

The city of Orlando is set to embark on a new project in the rapidly expanding Lake Nona community with the upcoming construction of a library and a multi-use city building. This development is a key part of the city’s efforts to accommodate the area’s booming population, bringing essential services closer to home for residents.

On August 8, 2024, the Orlando Development Review Committee is scheduled to review and likely approve a master plan for the $10 million, 14,600-square-foot Southeast Government Center and the future 20,000-square-foot Orange County Library System (OCLS) building. If the plan moves forward, the next step would be to secure city council approval and permitting. Construction is expected to begin in October, with the facilities slated for completion by December 2025.

Meeting the Needs of a Growing Population

The two-building project is essential for Lake Nona, an area that has seen significant residential and commercial growth. The new Southeast Government Center will house a variety of city services, including an Orlando Police Department substation and community meeting spaces. The adjacent library will serve as a crucial resource for the community, offering access to educational materials, digital services, and programming for residents of all ages.

Steven Powell, director and CEO of the Orange County Library System, confirmed the urgency of the project in the organization’s latest budget letter. He noted that the system plans to break ground on both the Lake Nona and Horizon West libraries in the near future, signaling the library’s commitment to serving two of Central Florida’s fastest-growing areas. The library’s latest budget proposal includes a $1.5 million allocation toward the Lake Nona facility.

The project is situated on a 4.91-acre parcel of land at 8301 Dowden Road, which the city is leasing from the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA). City officials emphasized the importance of the development to serve the rising demand in the southeast part of Orlando, which is projected to see an influx of more than 80,000 new residents by 2050. This growth will span areas like Vista Park, Starwood/Meridian Parks, Storey Park, and Lake Nona itself.

Lake Nona’s Continuing Evolution

Lake Nona, developed by Tavistock Development Co., is a 17-square-mile community that has added more than 5,000 homes since 2005. As part of its mission to create a vibrant, connected community, Tavistock has donated land for other civic projects, including a park and a fire station along Luminary Boulevard.

The addition of a library and government services center is yet another example of the thoughtful planning that has made Lake Nona one of Orlando’s most desirable neighborhoods.
