Exciting news is coming our way – the City of Orlando is planning to build a brand-new 14.2-acre park right here along Luminary Boulevard! This fantastic project, named Poitras Park, was presented to the city’s municipal planning board for a specific parcel master plan approval on May 9.

The park will be a wonderful addition to our community, featuring a splash pad, playground, walking trails, and courts for both pickleball and basketball. These amenities were carefully chosen to match the growing demand for sports and recreational activities in our area.

In an interesting twist, Tavistock Development, the mastermind behind our 17-square-mile Lake Nona community, sold this land to the city in March in exchange for impact fee credits. They also contributed 2.5 acres for a new fire station. Once the park plan receives approval from the Orlando City Council, the permitting process can begin, and construction will soon follow.

City spokesperson Doug Richards mentioned that the mix of park amenities was determined based on the popularity of sports like pickleball and the need for additional recreational facilities in our part of the city. While the project’s timeline depends on securing funds in the city budget, we are hopeful that it will move forward quickly.

In addition to Poitras Park, the city is addressing the rapid growth in Lake Nona with other projects, such as a $13 million Southeast Government Services Center. This facility will include a 15,000-square-foot building for Orlando government services and a 20,000-square-foot branch of the Orange County Library System. Construction was initially slated to begin in August and last 14 months, but the timeline is currently being updated.

Lake Nona is projected to welcome an additional 80,862 residents by 2050, including those in developments like Vista Park, Starwood/Meridian Parks, Storey Park, and of course, Lake Nona itself.

We are thrilled about the prospect of having Poitras Park as a new community hub and hope that it will be accessible to all residents, not just sporting organizations. It promises to be a fantastic space for families and individuals to enjoy outdoor activities and foster a sense of community. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
