Nemours Children’s Health is set to significantly expand its presence in Central Florida with an ambitious $300 million enhancement of its hospital campus in Lake Nona. This bold initiative underscores Nemours’ commitment to advancing pediatric healthcare and meeting the needs of the growing community.
The Jacksonville-based health system plans to construct three new buildings as part of the 130-bed Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida campus expansion. The multi-phase project will unfold over the next four years, culminating in substantial enhancements to patient care and operational capabilities.
Key Components of the Expansion:
- Pediatric Hospital Expansion:
- A 110,000-square-foot addition to the existing hospital.
- The expansion will double the size of the emergency department, provide new inpatient beds, and enlarge the imaging department.
- Slated to open to patients in 2028, this development will enhance Nemours’ ability to deliver timely and comprehensive care.
- New Patient Care Center:
- A 75,000-square-foot facility featuring six new operating rooms and additional patient exam rooms.
- This center will also house expanded services for the orthopedics division and sports medicine department.
- Scheduled for completion in 2028, it will support advanced medical procedures and specialty care.
- Administrative and Parking Facility:
- A 75,000-square-foot administration building, complemented by an 800-space parking garage.
- Construction is expected to conclude by 2027, providing essential infrastructure to support the hospital’s growing operations.
Dr. R. Lawrence Moss, president and CEO of Nemours Children’s Health, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion. “This expansion is a critical step in achieving our vision of bringing world-class children’s care to Florida,” he stated in a press release. “Our journey to become a nationally ranked children’s hospital here will give us the capacity to support even more families regionally, nationally, and internationally.”
Nemours Children’s Health operates over 50 locations across Florida and serves a pediatric population exceeding 300,000 children and teens. The health system anticipates nearly 5% growth in Central Florida’s pediatric population, currently estimated at 1 million, over the next five years.
The Orlando hospital first opened in 2012, situated on nearly 60 acres of land. As of 2023, Nemours employed over 2,824 full-time associates in Central Florida. This expansion marks a pivotal chapter in Nemours’ history, aligning with its mission to provide exceptional pediatric care to a growing and dynamic region.
